October Breast Awareness Month

In aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want you to really get to know your breasts and know how to take the best possible care of them.

We are all different – our breasts come in different shapes and sizes, and it isn’t unusual for one to be bigger than the other. They also vary in size and shape at different times of the month and with age.

Over time, the tissue and structure of our breasts begin to change. This is due to differences in our hormone levels caused by the natural, beautiful process of ageing. Oestrogen impacts the connective tissue and ligaments of the breast which results in the skin of the breasts becoming thinner, dehydrated and unable to spring back. Common complaints of ageing breasts are; crepey skin, stretch marks and fine lines.

Is there anything we can do to preserve this delicate area?

The breasts, chest, and neck are often overlooked when it comes to skincare routines — but these areas are just as affected by sun damage, pollution, and ageing as the skin on your face.

This area is more delicate, so it is best to not use harsh ingredients such as retinol or scrubs. Besides SPF (daily!) hydration is the key to a youthful-looking cleavage.

Opt for a daily layer of our Collagen Hand & Body Lotion Collagen Skincare Gel, Collagen Body Butter, to help firm, plump and nourish the skin. The unique formula deeply hydrates and nourishes the skin, whilst infusing skin with antioxidants to help filter out free radicals. Leaving you with smooth, healthy-looking skin.

Anything else?

Don’t smoke – a factor which contributes to accelerated ageing of breast tissue is smoking – the chemicals in cigarettes speed ageing by destroying elastin, a protein that helps the skin remain supple. Also wearing a poor fitting bra when exercising creates too much motion and results in over-stretching of the breasts.

Make sure you check your breasts – regularly!

Also, with age comes an increased risk of developing growths in the breasts, such as fibroids, cysts, and cancer. Keep in mind that women of any age can develop these conditions. You should give yourself regular breast self-exams to check for any growths as some changes aren’t normal.

How do I check my breasts?

Using our Collagen Neck & Bust Cream daily allows you to subconsciously check your breasts every day. The more we check our breasts the more likely we are to discover any sudden changes. Regular self-breast exams are something every woman should feel comfortable and confident doing as part of a healthy routine.

The NHS Breast Screening Programme has produced a 5-point plan for being breast aware:

  1. know what’s normal for you
  2. look at your breasts and feel them
  3. know what changes to look for
  4. report any changes without delay
  5. attend routine screening if you’re 50 or over

Look at your breasts and feel each breast and armpit, and up to your collarbone. You may find it easiest to do this in the shower or bath, by running a soapy hand over each breast and up under each armpit. You can also look at your breasts in the mirror. Look with your arms by your side and also with them raised.

Breast Changes to look out for…

See your GP if you notice any of the following changes:

  • a change in the size, outline or shape of your breast
  • a change in the look or feel of your skin, such as puckering or dimpling
  • a new lump, thickening or bumpy area in one breast or armpit that is different from the same area on the other side
  • nipple discharge that’s not milky
  • bleeding from your nipple
  • a moist, red area on your nipple that doesn’t heal easily
  • any change in nipple position, such as your nipple being pulled in or pointing differently
  • a rash on or around your nipple
  • any discomfort or pain in one breast, particularly if it’s new pain and doesn’t go away (although pain is only a symptom of breast cancer in rare cases)

Always seek your GP’s advice if you are concerned!

Breast changes can happen for many reasons, and most of them aren’t serious. Lots of women have breast lumps, and 9 out of 10 are not cancerous.

However, if you find changes in your breast that aren’t normal for you, it’s best to see your GP as soon as possible. If cancer is detected, then appropriate treatment should be planned as quickly as possible.

Simply Cleanse with SBC

The most commonly misused, and probably most underrated, skincare product is the cleanser.

Cleansing is the first step of your skincare routine, and if done properly it is to prep it for the next steps of your routine. If you don’t cleanse your face thoroughly before applying other products, they simply will not be as effective as they should be. Cleansers dissolve daily dirt, grime, impurities, and make-up, which, if left on the skin, can lead to a dull, congested and ageing complexion.

With so many cleansers available it is easy to feel overwhelmed when deciding which one to use. Understanding the difference between types of cleansers will allow you to narrow down your options and makes the hunt for your perfect cleanser easier.

Most Common Types of Cleansers

  1. Gel Cleansers are clear and are generally designed for deep cleansing. They are effective at decongesting clogged pores and removing excess oil, to help mattify the oily or combination skin types. Sage & Lemon Cleanser, All Skins 3-in-1 Cleanser
  2. Cream Cleansers are perfect for hydrating the skin. They gently cleanse your skin without stripping it of its natural oils, cream cleansers include milks and lotions, which are ideal for dry, dehydrated skin types. Collagen 3-in-1 Cleanser
  3. Foam cleansers are lightweight cleansers that burst into a rich, foamy lather. This type of cleanser removes excess oil as effectively as gel cleansers, and therefore best for oily, problematic skins, and combination skin types. Cotton Foaming Cleanser
  4. Oil Cleansers, it is often thought that you shouldn’t use an oil cleanser on oily skin, however, oil cleansers are an effective and gentle way of removing pore-clogging debris without drying your skin. Generally, oil cleansers are suitable for all types of skin.
  5. Cleansing Balms are very similar to oil cleansers, as they are made from oils and mixed with wax to achieve a thicker consistency. Their rich formulas make them great for those with combination or dry skin – a great nourishing winter cleanser.
  6. Micellar Cleansers feature ‘micelles’ (tiny oil molecules) which are suspended in soft water that attract oil, dirt and makeup and you don’t need to rinse them off with water, they are the ideal ‘quick fix’.

Cleansers for your Skin Type

The skin type and condition of your skin should affect your choice of cleanser. To ensure you get the desired results your cleanser should be specific in treating the needs of your skin condition:

  • Oily Skin: Gel-based cleansers, foaming cleansers and clay cleansers work best at removing impurities and excess oil. Oily skin needs gentle care that helps balance excess oil and shine and battles blemishes. Our Sage & Lemon Cleanser can help tackle oily, troublesome skin.
  • Dry, Dehydrated Skin: Cream cleansers and oil-based cleansers can help add moisture to the skin. Dry and dehydrated skin needs gentle cleansing that cleans the skin without leaving it feeling tight or uncomfortable. Try our best-selling Collagen 3-in-1 Cleanser.
  • Combination Skin: Combination skin has different needs, which can make it tricky to care for, usually, a lotion or water-based cleanser is preferable. Our Collagen 3-in-1 Cleanser can hydrate and help balance without drying. SBC’s All Skins 3-in-1 Cleanser  is also suitable, to leave skin feeling fresh smooth and thoroughly cleansed.
  • Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin requires extra-gentle cleansing, look for calming formulas that won’t irritate the skin, and avoid anything that may strip the skin. SBC have formulated the Cotton Foaming Cleanser to help soothe sensitive skin without causing dryness or irritation. Our Collagen 3-in-1 Cleanser. is also gentle enough for sensitive skin.
  • All Skin Types:  Oil Cleansers, Cleansing Balms and Micellar Waters are suitable for all skin types, they generally incorporate different ingredients to target specific skin concerns.

Double Cleansing – Fad or Fact?

In our opinion – twice the effort doubles the benefit!

Double cleansing is a two-step method for cleansing your skin: the first cleanse is to remove make-up/SPF/impurities; the second cleanse allows the key ingredients from your cleanser to penetrate your skin and be more effective. Double cleansing should be a necessity if you wear make-up, but also if you wear a daily SPF or spend a lot of time in a city, which can result in added free radical build up on the skin.

In terms of types of cleansers for your double cleanse you can use the same cleanser twice, however, to maximise the benefits of your routine we would recommend incorporating two different cleansers to achieve ultimate nourishment! The double cleanse will properly prepare your skin to absorb all the luscious products you choose to apply in the rest of your routine, which gets you the results you want quicker.

If you already use an eye-makeup remove or Micellar Cleanser before you wash your face, you are already double cleansing. Alternatively, cream or balm formulas will melt seamlessly into dry skin, helping to dissolve any remaining traces of the day, ready for your second cleanse. For your second cleanse consider a gel or creamy formulation suitable for your skin type or skin concern.

SBC’s Cleansing rules:

  1. Cleanse your face every morning – a splash of water will not cut it, skin can still get a build up of dirt and oil from your pillow.
  2. More importantly, cleanse your face every night – without fail! Even if you don’t wear make-up – dirt, oil and pollutants will build-up on your skin.
  3. Use our SBC Skin Shammy to remove your cleanser instead of just rinsing with water. The Shammy thoroughly removes impurities while also sloughing off dead skin cells and excess product for a brighter complexion.
  4. Don’t use freezing cold water or scalding hot water – both will cause damage to your skin. Go lukewarm – if it is a nice warm temperature for your hands it will be fine for your face.
  5. It is important to incorporate exfoliating into your cleansing routine. Exfoliation simply gives your complexion an instant glow by clearing away the dead skin cells that cause dullness. SBC’s Green Tea & Gingko Biloba Face Polish should be used 2-3 times a week, after cleansing.

Trust us – an effective cleansing routine will leave you with beautiful, glowing, healthy looking skin!

10 Tips to Keep Your Skin Hydrated

When we think of hydrated skin, we imagine plump, healthy-looking skin – yes please! Here are 10 simple ways to keep your complexion hydrated so you can enjoy naturally glowing, hydrated skin every day…

  1. First & foremost – drink water!

Let start working from the inside out. Give your skin the boost it needs to kick start the hydration journey. Water is essential to maintain the optimum skin moisture and deliver essential nutrients to the skin cells. It replenishes the skin tissue and increases its elasticity.

Just keep sipping – drink water first thing, every hour on the hour, and before bed.

  1. Eat your Water too

Leading dermatologists always recommend ‘eating your water’.

In other words, eating water-rich fruits and vegetables – as they will help keep your skin hydrated as well as deliver the beneficial nutrients. Eat water-dense fruits and veggies such as berries, watermelon, plums, peaches, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, and lettuce.

  1. Cut down on Caffeine, Alcohol & Sugar

So, whilst we are on the topic of diet, avoiding processed sugar is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Consuming too much sugar causes the collagen and elastin in your skin to break down. Also, diuretics such as caffeine or alcohol draw the water out of your body, and that includes your skin.

We aren’t saying cut them out completely, just cut down on the naughties. We believe everything in moderation is key – as we don’t want to deprive you of your favourite treats!

  1. Showers should be Luke Warm

Yes, we know, a toasty shower feels incredible – especially when it’s freezing outside. But long, hot showers can strip your skin of moisture, leaving you feeling dry. Instead, rinse off in lukewarm water, then apply moisturiser when your skin is still damp post-shower lock in the moisture.

  1. Choose a Creamy Cleanser

Cleansers can be drying on the skin, so a creamy cleanser like SBC’s Collagen 3-in-1 Cleanser will become your new best friend when it comes to locking moisture into your skin. Naturally mild, yet creamy, the delicious blend of Passion Flower and Kukui Seed Oils with added Cocoa and Shea Butters, help to cleanse skin leaving it soft, supple and – most importantly – balanced. Use daily and follow with a nourishing moisturiser.

  1. Upgrade your Moisturiser

Topically, you can fight dryness and the visible signs of aging with a moisturiser that contains hydrating and nourishing ingredients. Also, adding a little Hyaluronic Acid to your routine won’t hurt now. Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant which binds moisture to the skin by attracting water from the environment around you and help your skin preserve water. Think of it as a moisture magnet that will help the skin look smoother.

Collagen Ultra Rich Cream is a powerhouse moisturiser that intensely hydrates and absorbs easily and quickly into the skin. It’s also filled with high-performance ingredients including Hyaluronic acid. The powerful blend also encompasses Shea Butter, luxurious Sweet Almond Oil, vitamin-rich Kukui Seed Oil and exotic Passion Flower oil to effectively hydrate and nourish dry, dehydrated skin.

  1. Add a Gel

Our lightweight skincare gels can add and lock in moisture at the same time.

Since water is the ultimate hydrator, SBC Skincare Gels are formulated as exceptional multi-tasking products, to boost hydration from head to toe. The gels have a variety of uses which can be tailored to suit any skincare regime.

  1. Use a Hydrating Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest skin on your face, which is why it can easily lose moisture, and you can end up with fine lines. Consider a light, hydrating eye cream such as the new Collagen Illuminating Eye Cream – coming very soon and make it a staple in your daily skin-care routine to keep this delicate area hydrated, smooth and bright.

  1. Think Outside of Moisturiser

If your skin is craving more hydration, it might need a little extra something. Look for a hydrating serum to be applied after cleansing and before moisturising and can be used day at night. The rich and intensive Collagen Hydra-Gel Serum is full of hydrating ingredients to give skin an extra hydrating boost to smooth and condition the skin.

  1. Spritz throughout the day

These lightweight formulas may seem too gentle to make a difference, but it’s really about maintaining hydration. A light spritz is the perfect pick-me-up and won’t mess up your makeup.

Facial mists typically contain lower levels of extracts and skin conditioning agents than most facial moisturisers, so they are safe to use several times throughout the day. Mists are convenient to use on-the-go, at your desk, while traveling and anytime your skin feels dry or tight. SBC’s soothing, and hydrating Aloe Vera Spritz will cool, refresh and restore skin’s moisture balance, bringing an instant bust of radiance and relief to your skin.
